Help4 Builder Navigator and Layers

Navigator and layers

Understand the page tree before moving or deleting anything.

Navigator shows the hierarchy of sections, containers, columns, and widgets so complex pages can be edited without selecting the wrong layer.

Before the first click

Confirm what you are editing and where each kind of change belongs.

Read the page or template title first, select the exact element in the canvas or Navigator, then use the inspector tab that matches the job. This prevents a content change from becoming an accidental layout change.

Content

Change words, links, images, icons, data sources, shortcodes, and element-specific information.

Design

Change colors, typography, spacing, borders, radius, alignment, states, and desktop, tablet, or mobile values.

Advanced

Change labels, anchors, classes, attributes, visibility rules, motion, and other expert controls.

Page Settings

Use page-wide history, globals, publishing, template assignment, and recovery controls instead of editing one element.

Visual orientation

Match the screen before following the steps.

Open each image at full size. The numbered notes explain what the screen controls and what to confirm before changing customer content.

Lesson 26

Navigator, Layers, and Reusable Sections

Work safely with nested page structure, rename meaningful layers, and promote repeated sections into controlled templates.

  1. Read the Element Tree

Open Navigator when the canvas is crowded or an element is hard to click. Read the parent, slot, and child relationships before moving anything. Select the exact heading, image, button, column, or section by name so a small content update never removes the surrounding page structure.

  2. Name Important Layers

Give major sections and reusable elements descriptive names. Names such as Home Hero, Pricing Grid, or Contact Button make later support and team editing much safer than a long list of generic sections. Keep stable element identifiers when replacing content so responsive values and extension data remain connected.

  3. Reuse the Right Structure

Use a section or page template when the same structure belongs in several places. Insert a reviewed starter, then replace its sample copy, media, links, and accessibility text. Reuse should reduce repeated work without turning every page into an identical block of unrelated content.

  4. Manage Shared Templates

Use Builder Templates and Theme Builder for headers, footers, page shells, archives, search, 404 pages, and other shared layouts. Confirm the role and display conditions before publishing. A shared template change can reach many routes, so test one matching and one nonmatching page before completing the update.

  1. Open Builder Pages

Start in WordPress and choose Help4 Builder, then Builder Pages. Find the page you want and open it in Studio. This avoids editing the wrong WordPress object or template.

  2. Recognize Studio

Studio has three working areas. Elements and templates are on the left, your live page is in the center, and the selected element settings appear on the right.

  3. Use Navigator

When a page is busy, open Navigator. Select the exact section, heading, button, or image by name instead of trying to click through overlapping content.

  4. Know Your Recovery Controls

Before a larger change, open Page Settings and confirm the page mode and history controls. You now know where to recover without rebuilding the page.

Navigator workflow

Use names and hierarchy to make complex pages predictable.

A useful layer name explains the page job, while valid parent relationships prevent missing or duplicated content.

No dangling children

Every non-root element needs a valid parent.

No duplicate IDs

Each element ID must remain unique after duplicate, import, or recovery.

No accidental page reset

Deleting one HTML or image widget must never clear unrelated page elements.

Guided walkthrough

Make one verified change at a time.

Each step includes the action, why it belongs in this order, and the checkpoint to verify before moving forward.

  1. Open Navigator

Use the Studio toolbar and close it with its close control or Escape when finished.

Why nowStarting from a confirmed target prevents a correct edit from being applied to the wrong page, template, product, or responsive view.

Done whenThe open navigator result is visible, remains after reselecting the item, and has not changed unrelated content or styling.

  2. Rename important layers

Use names such as Hero, Proof Grid, Pricing CTA, Contact Form, or Mobile Menu instead of repeated generic labels.

Why nowCompleting and checking this step creates a known-good checkpoint before the next control changes the page state again.

Done whenThe rename important layers result is visible, remains after reselecting the item, and has not changed unrelated content or styling.

  3. Expand the tree

Confirm which widgets belong to each section, container, column, tab, slide, or reusable block.

Why nowCompleting and checking this step creates a known-good checkpoint before the next control changes the page state again.

Done whenThe expand the tree result is visible, remains after reselecting the item, and has not changed unrelated content or styling.

  4. Reorder carefully

Move one branch, confirm its new parent and slot, then review the preview before moving another.

Why nowCompleting and checking this step creates a known-good checkpoint before the next control changes the page state again.

Done whenThe reorder carefully result is visible, remains after reselecting the item, and has not changed unrelated content or styling.

  5. Duplicate intentionally

Rename the copy immediately and replace duplicate IDs or content through the supported Builder action.

Why nowCompleting and checking this step creates a known-good checkpoint before the next control changes the page state again.

Done whenThe duplicate intentionally result is visible, remains after reselecting the item, and has not changed unrelated content or styling.

  6. Delete a branch safely

Confirm the selected parent and all descendants; undo or use History when the wrong branch was removed.

Why nowThe final verification separates an editor preview from a result that is actually saved, responsive, interactive, and ready for visitors.

Done whenThe delete a branch safely result is visible, remains after reselecting the item, and has not changed unrelated content or styling.

How to know it worked

Verify the edit in Studio and on the real page.

A successful edit stays visible when the element is reselected, matches the intended responsive view, survives publish, and appears on the public URL without clipping or lost styling.

Studio preview

Reselect the element and confirm the saved value and visual result are still present.

Responsive preview

Check desktop, tablet, 390px, and 360px widths for overflow, squeezed controls, and inherited values.

Public page

Open the public route in a new tab after publishing and confirm content, interactions, assets, and spacing.

Recovery

If the result is wrong, stop editing and use History or a known-good revision instead of rebuilding the page.

Avoid the expensive mistakes

Stop when the page stops behaving predictably.

More edits do not repair a bad state. Preserve the evidence, return to a known revision, and reproduce the smallest failing action.

Changing several controls at once

Change one content, design, or responsive value, then confirm it in the preview. A small edit is easier to understand and recover.

Editing the wrong layer

Use Navigator and read the inspector heading. Deleting a parent section can remove every child even when the selected text or image looked harmless.

Checking only desktop

Review tablet, 390px, and 360px before publish. Width, gap, padding, type, alignment, controls, and menus can inherit differently.

Publishing before values persist

Reselect the element and reopen the responsive view. If the value disappears or another tab has a newer revision, reconcile it before publishing.
