Help4 Builder Video, HLS and Background Video

Video and HLS

Build dependable video and background heroes with a complete fallback path.

Help4 video controls support an HLS stream or direct media source, browser-compatible fallbacks, a poster, a separate failure image, playback behavior, responsive focal positioning, and overlaid Builder content without raw HTML.

Before the first click

Confirm what you are editing and where each kind of change belongs.

Read the page or template title first, select the exact element in the canvas or Navigator, then use the inspector tab that matches the job. This prevents a content change from becoming an accidental layout change.

Content

Change words, links, images, icons, data sources, shortcodes, and element-specific information.

Design

Change colors, typography, spacing, borders, radius, alignment, states, and desktop, tablet, or mobile values.

Advanced

Change labels, anchors, classes, attributes, visibility rules, motion, and other expert controls.

Page Settings

Use page-wide history, globals, publishing, template assignment, and recovery controls instead of editing one element.

Visual orientation

Match the screen before following the steps.

Open each image at full size. The numbered notes explain what the screen controls and what to confirm before changing customer content.

Lesson 16

Sliders, Motion, and Video Fallbacks

Configure accessible sliders and video with responsive sizing, reduced motion, HLS primary playback, and dependable fallbacks.

Open the written guide

Read the complete transcript
  1. Configure the Slider Source

Select the Slider element and choose saved slides or approved dynamic content. Set a deliberate order, limit, image fit, and responsive height. Keep keyboard, swipe, arrows, dots, and a pause control available whenever the slider advances or changes content automatically.

  2. Use Motion with Restraint

Choose the transition, duration, delay, easing, and optional image motion for a clear purpose. Avoid rapid autoplay or movement that hides information before it can be read. Reduced-motion visitors should receive a stable version without losing the slide content or controls.

  3. Build the Video Fallback Chain

For video, set HLS as the primary stream when available, then provide a compatible MP4, WebM, or media-library fallback. Add a poster and a separate failure image. Configure controls, preload, fit, title, mute, loop, and autoplay according to the video's actual role.

  4. Verify Playback and Layout

Test desktop, tablet, and mobile with normal and reduced motion. Check HLS support, file fallback, blocked autoplay, poster loading, failure image, captions where speech matters, keyboard controls, focal framing, and page containment. A working administrator preview is not the final playback test.

Video workflow

Plan the failure state before turning on autoplay.

The visitor should still understand and use the page when a stream is unsupported, slow, blocked by autoplay policy, unavailable, or intentionally reduced for accessibility.

Decorative video stays quiet

Background video is muted, removed from the accessibility tree, and never blocks access to the real content.

Reduced motion remains useful

The poster or failure image replaces ambient motion while headings and actions remain present.

Preview matches public

Studio loads the same player runtime, sources, overlays, focal settings, and breakpoint values as the public renderer.

Guided walkthrough

Make one verified change at a time.

Each step includes the action, why it belongs in this order, and the checkpoint to verify before moving forward.

  1. Choose foreground or background

Use a Video element for meaningful media with controls and accessible context. Use section or container background video only when headings, text, and buttons remain normal editable children above it.

Why nowStarting from a confirmed target prevents a correct edit from being applied to the wrong page, template, product, or responsive view.

Done whenThe choose foreground or background result is visible, remains after reselecting the item, and has not changed unrelated content or styling.

  2. Set the primary source

Add the validated HLS manifest when adaptive streaming is available, or use a supported direct video URL for simple delivery.

Why nowCompleting and checking this step creates a known-good checkpoint before the next control changes the page state again.

Done whenThe set the primary source result is visible, remains after reselecting the item, and has not changed unrelated content or styling.

  3. Add browser fallbacks

Provide MP4, M4V, WebM, or Ogg sources in the supported fields so playback can continue when HLS is unavailable.

Why nowCompleting and checking this step creates a known-good checkpoint before the next control changes the page state again.

Done whenThe add browser fallbacks result is visible, remains after reselecting the item, and has not changed unrelated content or styling.

  4. Set poster and failure image

Use a correctly sized poster for the first frame and loading state, then set a separate failure image that preserves contrast and the page message if every source fails.

Why nowCompleting and checking this step creates a known-good checkpoint before the next control changes the page state again.

Done whenThe set poster and failure image result is visible, remains after reselecting the item, and has not changed unrelated content or styling.

  5. Configure playback

Autoplay requires mute; choose loop, controls, preload, and inline playback based on whether the media is decorative or user-requested.

Why nowCompleting and checking this step creates a known-good checkpoint before the next control changes the page state again.

Done whenThe configure playback result is visible, remains after reselecting the item, and has not changed unrelated content or styling.

  6. Compose the hero

Set cover or contain, overflow clipping, overlay color or gradient, opacity, and clean stacking so editable headings, text, and buttons remain above the video.

Why nowCompleting and checking this step creates a known-good checkpoint before the next control changes the page state again.

Done whenThe compose the hero result is visible, remains after reselecting the item, and has not changed unrelated content or styling.

  7. Tune every viewport

Set min height and focal X/Y independently for desktop, tablet, and mobile; confirm the important subject stays visible without covering the call to action.

Why nowCompleting and checking this step creates a known-good checkpoint before the next control changes the page state again.

Done whenThe tune every viewport result is visible, remains after reselecting the item, and has not changed unrelated content or styling.

  8. Test the fallback matrix

Check HLS success, direct fallback, blocked autoplay, source failure, poster display, controls, keyboard use, reduced motion, 1280, 768, and 390 pixels.

Why nowThe final verification separates an editor preview from a result that is actually saved, responsive, interactive, and ready for visitors.

Done whenThe test the fallback matrix result is visible, remains after reselecting the item, and has not changed unrelated content or styling.

How to know it worked

Verify the edit in Studio and on the real page.

A successful edit stays visible when the element is reselected, matches the intended responsive view, survives publish, and appears on the public URL without clipping or lost styling.

Studio preview

Reselect the element and confirm the saved value and visual result are still present.

Responsive preview

Check desktop, tablet, 390px, and 360px widths for overflow, squeezed controls, and inherited values.

Public page

Open the public route in a new tab after publishing and confirm content, interactions, assets, and spacing.

Recovery

If the result is wrong, stop editing and use History or a known-good revision instead of rebuilding the page.

Avoid the expensive mistakes

Stop when the page stops behaving predictably.

More edits do not repair a bad state. Preserve the evidence, return to a known revision, and reproduce the smallest failing action.

Changing several controls at once

Change one content, design, or responsive value, then confirm it in the preview. A small edit is easier to understand and recover.

Editing the wrong layer

Use Navigator and read the inspector heading. Deleting a parent section can remove every child even when the selected text or image looked harmless.

Checking only desktop

Review tablet, 390px, and 360px before publish. Width, gap, padding, type, alignment, controls, and menus can inherit differently.

Publishing before values persist

Reselect the element and reopen the responsive view. If the value disappears or another tab has a newer revision, reconcile it before publishing.
